Most people rush around with poor postural habits, just like badly schooled horses! Yet the way we habitually use ourselves, in daily life and when riding, may well feel normal and 'right' to us. However, what we feel may not actually be what is happening! This is why if you are told you are sitting behind the vertical, for example, you will probably actually feel upright. Changing it will most likely feel 'wrong' and as if you are now leaning forwards.
If it doesn't feel as if you are doing what your instructor tells you, it can be frustrating and seem impossible to make permanent changes. The Alexander Technique re-educates a person's sense of feel and so offers a way to get to the core of such issues, even when they are unconscious or deeply ingrained habits.
Dressage for People
Alexander Technique lessons have been scientifically proven to be hugely beneficially for people with long-term back pain, see the BMJ report. This is not surprising when you realise that, through the Alexander Technique, people have been schooled from 'hollow' to 'round' and now have a good head, neck, back relationship. This allows them to use their body efficiently and as nature intended.
